PLANS to build 160 homes on Bridgwater's former cattle market site off Bath Road have been submitted this week.

There has been permission for a developer to build up 200 homes on the derelict site for five years but as yet no homes have been constructed.

Now Keepmoat Homes Ltd has put in a new application for 160 homes and reducing the number of car parking spaces by 40.

The brownfield site, which consists of approximately 3.5 hectares of land, has been left mainly vacant since the cattle market moved to the Regional Rural Business Centre.

There are plans to create a new access point off Bristol Road as well as an access route off of Lower Bath Road, and the proposed development includes two, three and four bedroom houses along with one and two-bed apartments.

The planned apartments will be four-storey buildings, and the plan also includes landscaping and a play area in the centre of the development. A pedestrian and cycle route is also included in the new plans.

The site is currently used as a through way with many people walking and cycling across the site. There is an existing area of concrete hardstanding and areas of grassland that have developed over the years.

When the first application was submitted, 64 residents in Bristol Road signed a petition objecting to the plan.

Their concerns included overdevelopment, parking problems, and the access road proposal.

The Section 106 agreement on the previous application included money for education, highways works, affordable housing, public open spaces, play facilities, formal sports provision, flood defence and phasing.

The application is now available to view on the Sedgemoor District Council website and comments are welcome until Friday, April 13.

Go to the website's planning section and search for the application 08/18/00048 to view the full plans.
