PLANS for a new major housing development which could see 75 homes built in North Petherton have been unveiled this week.

The site is located on land off Taunton to the east of the A38, and is included as part of the Sedgemoor Draft Local Plan.

The application has been submitted by Persimmon Homes Severn Valley, the company which built a large number of the homes that form the Wilstock and Stockmoor estates.

The estate would be accessed via a new road off the A38 - the developers say this would most likely be a new T-junction but it has not been confirmed yet.

A Persimmon Homes spokesman said: "This development represents a robust, sustainable, intelligent and well-thought out response to the site. The proposal will deliver a development which is appropriate to the area and will contribute towards meeting identified housing needs in the area."

In accordance with Sedgemoor District Council's planning policy, 30 per cent of the homes in the development will be affordable homes, accounting for 23 of the 75 properties.

The plans are for a mix of one, two and three bedroom properties with a mix of flats, short-terraced, semi-detached and detached houses.

Persimmon say the homes will have a 'simple form' design which will be in keeping with the existing nearby properties in North Petherton.

The developers are proposing a total of 164 parking spaces, including garages, for the 75 new homes. Meanwhile each road will have 2m wide footpaths either side.

The Persimmon Homes spokesman added: "We have engaged with Sedgemoor District Council in a formal pre-application process to discuss the principals of development.

"We have also undertaken consultation with the local community, carrying out a leaflet drop and questionnaire to 100 properties in close proximity to the site."

However one Taunton Road resident has already objected, citing concerns over the extra traffic and potential danger of the new junction, as well the fact the doctor's surgery is already very busy.

To cater for the surface run-off likely to be created by the new homes, an attenuation pond is planned for the southern corner of the development.

Comments on the application are welcome until Tuesday, February 20.
