PLANS to convert space above the former Hooper's store in Bridgwater High Street into three flats have been met with strong objections.

One ward councillor has objected saying the plan would add to problems of 'littered devastation' around St Mary's Church.

The Grade II listed property would see the ground floor remain set aside for retail use, but the first floor previously used as part of the shop, and the second floor storage space would both be converted if the application is given the green light.

One of Bridgwater's oldest stores, Hooper's sadly closed its doors after more than 140 years of trading in December 2016.

Cllr Brian Smedley, ward member for Westover, writes in his objection: "This plan would see the loss of the first floor and therefore a reduction in retail space in the town centre.

"Also the situation regarding disposal of rubbish around the curtilage of St Mary's Church, and in particular in Church Passage, is a major concern with up to 30 medium to large bins along what was once a right of way.

"Now it is often a scene of littered devastation which needs addressing in the long term by a review of the situation, and in the short term by not permitting any further addition to this mess."

Cllr Smedley said that the street scene to the north of the churchyard had gradually changed for the worse in recent years and this plan would further harm what could otherwise be an attractive centrepiece for the town.

Three other letters of objection have been received by members of the public.

However the proposal, which will go before Sedgemoor District Council's development committee today, is recommended for approval by the council's planning officers.

In his report, planning officer Liam Evans states that because the ground floor and basement would remain for retail use there would not be a total loss of retail space.

He also says that while there is an issue with waste disposal in the area, the application should be considered on its own merits.

Mr Evans said:"It is considered unreasonable to reject the proposal based upon a wider issue that requires a more strategic and joined up approach to tackling."
