In this week's column, Sedgemoor FM DJ Dave Englefield asks: 'Do so many songs need explicit lyrics?'

Every week I get sent lots of new music of all sorts and styles. Some good, some less so. The way the music gets to me these days has changed a lot from when I started out in radio when record companies would send a sales rep around with a pile of cd’s for me to listen to in the hope that I would play them on the show.

Fast forward to today and all the music is sent to me as a download. I get an email to say 'here is the new single from The XX, click here to download it'.

It then disappears into a folder on the computer and I eventually get round to listening to it. What I don’t get is the number of tracks I get sent that have an explicit lyrics warning.

Why? Why would you send someone a song with explicit lyrics in especially if that person is on the radio and couldn’t play the track even if they wanted to?

What invariably happens is that they will send out a 'radio friendly version', a few days later. Why not just wait until the radio version is ready before sending anything out at all?

Or better still, just don’t put anything dodgy in the lyrics in the first place. You just couldn’t imagine the likes of Elvis, the Beatles, Cliff or Abba ever writing a song with explicit lyrics in the first place, can you?

Anyway, enough of my ranting.

On the radio front it’s all back to normal(ish) this week as Mark Painter returns from his break to host the drivetime show and Chris slots back into Friday nights again, although Mike is still away on Sunday so Charlie is looking after the show for him.

You can hear Dave Englefield on the breakfast show on 104.2 Sedgemoor FM weekdays from 6am-10am
