PURITON'S Village Green has been awash with colour this week as residents have donned the area with creative crochet.

The village's Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, the Honey Bees Nursery, and Puriton Primary School among others have all contributed to the decoration.

The event was the brainchild of Sarah-Jane Shillito, after a small request on Facebook took off in a big way.

Mrs Shillito said: "I thought in January, you know what - I spend too many evenings looking at my phone at what other people have had for dinner and wanted to do something different.

"I put a post on the village's social media page to see if anyone could teach me crochet, and suddenly 15 comments later it seemed there was a whole group interested.

"A lady called Julie-Ann who works at Inspirational Craft in Bridgwater was happy to teach us and we have been meeting regularly since," she said.

Mrs Shillito took inspiration from last year's 'Yarn Bombing' event in Taunton's Bath Place and wanted to bring something similar to Puriton, but had no idea how successful it would be.

"We have people crafting from all ages - it has brought the area to life. One of the homes across the road put out a gazebo and set up a small village cafe which was a big success," she said.

One of the ideas that has taken off has been a memorial tree where people can post ribbon tributes to loved ones and pets.

"With so much negative news it is nice to do something positive, frivolous and fun that has brought the community together. I hope we can do something similar next year," she said.

Money raised from the event will go toward Children's Hospice South West. The colourful decorations were taken down on Friday night.
