A POLISH national died after his road sweeper clipped a skip lorry and crashed on the A361 at Grove Hill, Othery last year, an inquest found.

Piotr Polinski, 52, from Indroclaw, Poland was driving behind a fellow road sweeper at 7.15am on July 19 last year when the incident occurred.

At his inquest held in Taunton's Municipal Buildings on Tuesday, June 13, the court heard witness statements and evidence from the collision investigation officer which suggested Polinski's vehicle had been slightly over the central marking when it clipped a skip lorry travelling in the opposite direction.

This caused the lorry driver's window to implode and Polinski swerved, riding up the grass verge on the opposite side and kicking up dust before careering over the wrong side of the road, with the vehicle tipping onto its side and landing in a ditch.

Senior Coroner Tony Williams concluded Polinski had died of acute asphyxia and multiple rib fractures.

There was no evidence found in the post mortem that Polinski had any drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of the incident.
