A CONSULTATION has been launched on plans for a further 140 homes for North Petherton, which the developer says could bring a big boost to the town’s economy.

Developer Gladman Land is looking to build a total of 140 homes of various sizes, as well as play areas, footpaths, and road access on land off Newton Road to the south of the town.

The town council was due to discuss the development at its meeting last night, while residents are now being asked for their views on the proposal.

Bridgwater Mercury:

Gladman Land say the development has the potential to deliver a number of benefits for the town.

The information leaflet which has been posted to approximately 640 homes in the town states that the development will benefit both existing and future residents.

“The new development will have new public open space and footpaths, a fully equipped play space to cater for a range of ages, affordable housing to help those wanting to get onto to the property ladder, high quality housing and increased customers and support for local businesses.

“We believe that a development should provide an opportunity to improve the range of services that are available in North Petherton.

“We would be very interested to hear your views on what facilities would be most valued in your community.”

Bridgwater Mercury:

Gladman Land says its preliminary research indicates a significant boost in local spending and a potential reduction in commuter levels to surrounding areas.

“Local businesses such as shops, the Post Office and public houses are likely to benefit from the additional custom that the development will generate, therefore boosting the local economy and ensuring the future viability of these services.

“There is an indication that the gross spending power of the new residents could be in excess of £3 million per year, a proportion of which will be spent in the locality.”

Gladman Homes says it will work closely with the highways authority to ensure the development can be accommodated.

“Access to the site is proposed off Newton Road. This is considered the safest and most appropriate location to access the site and will be discussed with the local highways authority.”

The developer also says it will provide contributions to ensure sufficient school places are made available for the new population through the provision of new classrooms.
