FIREFIGHTERS from Bridgwater were called to help rescue a woman and her dog after they got stuck on a cliff at Cheddar Gorge. 

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called at 2.37pm on April 19 to reports of a woman and her dog stuck on a cliff. 

 One fire appliance and an off road vehicle from Cheddar, one fire appliance from Wells, a specialist rescue team from Bridgwater, one specialist tactical advisor and an operational assurance officer were mobilised to the incident along with additional rescources and supporting officers from Avon and Somerset Police.

On arrival crews confirmed they had located the woman with no sign of injury but her dog appeared to have sustained some injuries.

Crews got to work formulating a plan in order to carry out the rescue.  

At 3.48pm firefighters closed off the Gorge and safety cordons were put in place.

One woman was found uninjured but her dog had sustained injuries. 

A specialist rescue team scaled the cliff face to make contact with the casualty.

At 4.17pm the female casualty was rescued and taken to a place of safety by the Specialist Rescue Team using a harness and was being assessed by West Country Ambulance. 

The dog was yet to be rescued. 

At 4.33pm the dog was rescued from the cliff face and was now back with its owner and being reported to the vets.

Fire crews were at work clearing away their equipment and the road remained closed at the base of the Gorge.

Safety officers still remained at the site.
