AN OVERTURNED lorry has left the A39 Puriton Hill closed at Bawdrip after crashing into a house.

The incident happened at around 3.20pm are police have closed the road in both directions near Knowle Inn.

The lorry has overturned between Chedzoy Lane in Puriton and New Road at Bawdrip with heavy traffic reported in the area.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "We were called out at 3.20pm to reports of a lorry in collision with a house near the Knowle Inn at Bawdrip.

Bridgwater Mercury:

"The road is currently closed which is being managed by Highways on behalf of Somerset County Council.

"The vehicle was carrying scrap metal, and the male driver has been taken to Musgrove Park Hospital with what are reported to be minor injuries."

Firefighters from Bridgwater and Taunton attended the scene, where the lorry was overturned on its side and had come to rest in the front garden of a house.

Bridgwater Mercury:

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "All persons were free and clear of the vehicle and the house upon the arrival of the Fire Service. 

"Fire crews made the vehicles safe and isolated the electricity supply to the house.

"Fire crews also checked to confirm there were no vehicle fluids entering the water courses."

Police dealt with telephone cables and street lights which had been damaged as a result of this incident.

Structural engineers are currently carrying out assessments on the house.
