A BUS lane planned for the Wilstock development has been ‘postponed indefinitely’.

As part of a Section 106 agreement agreed with the developers, as soon as the 1,100th resident moved in it would trigger a clause to create a bus lane linking Wilstock to Rhode Lane, which could also be used by cyclists and pedestrians.

The clause was initially triggered in 2014 but now faces another setback as Somerset County Council Highways says it cannot justify building the route as there are no plans to operate regular bus services along it.

Somerset County Council Highways said following a review by the traffic manager ‘it has been established it will not be possible to implement a bus gate order in this location at this time’.

A spokesman added: “There are currently no plans to operate regular bus services along this route. As such the installation and enforcement of a bus gate cannot be justified.”

SCC say any bus route must have a traffic management benefit but because the operator has no plans to serve the bus gate, the installation has been called off.

Although the bus lane will not be created, new bollards will be put in place to stop cars ‘rat-running’ through the zone.

Cllr Leigh Redman has been campaigning to get the bus lane installed for a number of years and said: “I have requested clarification, and requested a meeting with one of First managers to try and find a way forward.

“In the meantime the start date of mid April still stands and the infrastructure linking to Rhode Lane will go in, bollards will be placed in the road without the ANPR cameras, but I hope will be able to get the full implementation.”
