ARE awards ceremonies all they are cracked up to be? Not according to Sedgemoor FM's DJ Dave Englefield.

Check out his thoughts in this week's column:

It’s Awards season with all the good and great, and in some cases not so good and great, from the world of screen, stage and music stepping up to find out what they have won - or trying not to look too put out or jealous if they go home empty handed.

Over the years I have been to a few of these types of shows and to be honest, I consider them a bit of a waste of time and money.

After all, how many careers can you get into whereby every so often you get a free night out, plied with food and drink and told that you are really great at doing the job you were hired to do in the first place, usually at great expense.

Surely their nicely expanded bank balances are proof that they’ve done something that proved to be quite popular and therefore a reflection of a job well done?

Why aren’t there awards nights for the likes of nurses, electricians, plumbers, shopkeepers, charity workers etc? The contribution that they make to society is, surely, at least as worthy if not more worthy of recognition or am I wrong? I guess it doesn’t make for great TV ratings but even so…..

In other bits, don’t forget to pick up your brand new Sedgemoor FM car sticker and display it proudly, you can pick them up all over town now, and you could even end up joining me one morning on the breakfast show!

You can hear Dave Englefield on the Breakfast Show on 104.2 Sedgemoor FM, weekdays from 6am
