THE volunteers who produce the Bridgwater Talking News (BTN), the audio version of the Bridgwater Mercury and Burnham & Highbridge Weekly News for the blind and partially sighted celebrated the production of the 400th weekly edition.

The group gathered for a social evening at the Admirals Landing recently

to celebrate the production of the 400th weekly edition.

The service which was started in April 2009 by Bridgwater Lions began with just 10 listeners, a single Sony cassette recorder and a few 'wannabe readers'.

Richard Culverhouse, who is chairman and trustee of the BTN Charity told the Mercury: “It doesn’t seem possible that it was that long ago that we began.

"For me the BTN has always been an enjoyable exercise which continues to this day.

"We have met some super people both listeners and volunteers and I didn’t really expect it to have developed to this extent when we began.

"The format is simple, much appreciated by our listeners and good fun to produce."

With the sad demise of Bridgwater Lions in 2016, the BTN is now on its own having to raise the funds to continue and promoting the service," Richard said.

"However, we are not resting on our laurels and need to keep up the good work for our 65 listeners.

"It is a simple fact that the service could not done without the continuing support of the volunteers and for that we thank them all.”

Mr Culverhouse added: “While the number of readers is generally ok, we are always looking for a few more to take part as well as editors and as recording engineers etc.

"These are not difficult tasks so if anyone is prepared to come and see what we do and have a try please get in touch.

"Similarly, if you know of anyone who might benefit from receiving the BTN please let us know. There is no charge and the player to enable them to listen will be provided if needed."
