YOUNG people in Bridgwater are being given the chance to find out all about 3D printing as part of a competition which could see them win an Xbox.

Bridgwater Library is holding a 3D Design and Print competition, launching on Saturday to help provide young people and schools with an opportunity to find out more about 3D printing and design.

At the event they can see the 3D printers in action, try out the 3D design software, try out fun tech gadgets and join free workshops happening throughout the day.

The competition will focus on Bridgwater culture, history and geography to foster interest in the local area, develop civic pride and promote information sharing in communities.

It's the result of collaboration between Somerset Libraries, Sedgemoor District Council, Bridgwater Town Council, multinational software corporation; Autodesk and CEL, manufacturer of Robox 3D printers.

Cllr David Hall, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Somerset libraries said: “3D printing offers fantastic opportunities in so many industries; from manufacturing to medicine.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to help young people develop the knowledge, skills and interest which might encourage them towards engineering and digital design careers.”

The competition is open to all young people aged nine to 17 who live and attend school in the Bridgwater area.

Entrants need to submit the design of a 3D object representing an aspect of Bridgwater they believe is important; it could be a building, a place, an industry, an event, a person.

The competition closes on April 15 after which a panel of judges will chose the winners who will receive a prize and have their creations displayed in Bridgwater Library.

Top prizes include an Xbox for the overall winner.

Full details of the competition are available on digitalbridgwater.com and the full programme for the Digital Bridgwater Maker Day on February 18 can be found on somersetlibraries.co.uk/events and on the Bridgwater Library Facebook page.

For the non-technologists the Cornish Crafty Girls are coming to the launch event to run some craft workshops.
