A MENTAL health charity has received funding from Burnham and Highbridge Town Council and Sedgemoor District Council to run two ambassador courses.

In Charley's Memory, a charity set up after the death of Burnham-on-Sea teenager Charley Marks, is running two ambassador courses aimed at King Alfred's school students in years 9-12 and students at Bridgwater College.

The aim of the scheme is to develop links between the school, college and the charity so young people can be more involved in developing mental health services and  know where to find support if they or one of their peers needs it.

The Bridgwater College Students will complete the Mental Health First Aid Course - an international qualification -  and the King Alfred students will complete a shorter course around mental health & well-being.

All ambassadors will be fully supported by a mentor throughout the year and there will be a celebration event on completion of training.

A spokeswoman for In Charleys Memory said: "The idea of the Ambassadors & Young Ambassadors schemes are to improve links between ICM, young people and their schools and colleges.

"The idea is the Ambassadors can help shape our services as well as having resources to support their own and their friend's mental well-being and sign post to services that can help.

"We will support them throughout the year with a mentor and there will be a celebration event on completion of training.

"We have more training courses and workshops too so please check our Facebook page for more information."

These schemes have been funded by the town and district councils.

The training schemes are on October 22 and October 29 with a celebration event on completion of training.
