GOOD news for drivers - the sequencing of the traffic light signals at Huntworth roundabout in Bridgwater has been amended to improve safety and traffic flow in the area.

The new sequence has addressed the issue of drivers not stopping at the roundabout internal stop line.

The lights had been addressed by residents and drivers as a "nightmare" - with scores of people driving through red lights, and several accidents and crashes reported since they reopened earlier this month.

The change will now see the North Petherton approach, the internal Stop Line by Campion Way and the internal Stop Line by the A38 North Petherton being on red whilst Campion Way exits, then Campion Way will be held on red whilst the roundabout and its approaches are allowed to run.

Cllr David Fothergill, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport said: “It is not uncommon to need to fine tune traffic lights after installation to take account of driver behaviour at specific locations.

“However I am delighted that the changes that have been made seem to have had the desired effect of addressing some real safety concerns at the new roundabout.”

Also, at the Gateway site on the road to North Petherton temporary traffic lights to allow connection onto the Water Main were removed for the weekend and are only intended to be used for a couple of days this week.

The temporary traffic lights will be removed prior to this bank holiday weekend and should not be needed again until the final carriageway surfacing is undertaken in October during overnight works.

Cllr Fothergill added: “Whilst I understand that the remaining work under temporary traffic lights is frustrating to residents and commuters of the North Petherton area, I must stress that undertaking the utility works now as part of the Huntworth scheme does avoid future work and disruption in the area.”
