MAJOR works to rebuild the A39 through Loxley Woods near Ashcott have been confirmed to start on Wednesday, August 31.

Somerset County Council will use innovative methods to recycle 70 per cent of road material while strengthening and improving about two miles of carriageway.

These methods are not suitable for every scheme, but are similar to the ones currently being used to repair the A3088 Cartgate Link Road near Yeovil.

Traditional resurfacing could have taken several months but this should be completed in just four weeks to help minimise disruption on a key route between Bridgwater and Street.

The recycling will also keep costs down and is better for the environment by vastly reducing the need to transport materials.

Roadworks are due to begin on Wednesday, August 31, using overnight road closures between 7pm and 7am to reduce the impact on the travelling public.

Temporary traffic lights will also be needed during the day so drivers are advised to allow extra time or consider using alternative routes.

Cllr David Fothergill, Somerset County Council’s cabinet member for highways, said: “We’re committed to keeping our roads in top condition and will always try to use innovative methods to keep disruption to a minimum.

“The A39 is a very busy road so I’m pleased we have been able to use this cutting-edge road recycling technique to reduce the costs, timeframe and, most importantly, the impact on the travelling public.

“The bulk of the work will take place at night, but please be aware of the road closure times and the need for traffic lights during the day.

"Please plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey.”
