A barn has been almost completely destroyed after a fire in North Petherton, which saw three being taken to hospital.

Six crews attended the fire, which occurred on July 21 at 11:24am in Melcombe Lane.

Crews arrived from Bridgwater and Taunton, and on route the crews asked for extra assistance as large plumes of smoke could be seen from some distance away.

An additional fire engine from Burnham on Sea was mobilised.

On arrival the crews confirmed a mechanics workshop was well alight, along with a large diesel tank next to the building.

One female suffered burns and several people were suffering from smoke inhalation, so the ambulance was called.

The crews asked for more assistance and a crew from Nether Stowey attended, as well as an incident command unit from Street and the environmental protection unit from Taunton.

A spokesperson for the fire servuice said: "80% percent of the building was damaged by fire and approximately six vehicles.

"The fire was extinguished using two compressed air foam jets, two main jets and a light portable pump.

"Three casualties were taken to hospital and one given advice at the scene."

The cause of the fire was accidental.
