BRIDGWATER'S residents turned out in force to celebrate the newly revamped Coronation Park.

Sedgemoor District Council held a free family fun day this weekend with tonnes of activities making the most of new play and sport equipment.

Coronation Park, on Parkway in Sydenham, had all of the existing play and sport equipment removed and replaced with modern play, sport and dog walking facilities with the full project costing £230,000.

The fun day included a basketball dunking competition, outdoor gym demos with the Active Bridgwater team from SASP, football skills with Yeovil Town FC's Community Sports Trust and even a tug of war with the local police!

For the more creative people who attended, tile glazing with Knightstone was available.

There was also a dog competition featuring prizes for three classes: fabulous fella, loveliest lady and best in show.

The new play facilities feature separate toddler and junior play zones including a 25m zip wire, trampoline, gliders, slides, swings as well as two large multi-play units.

The park also now features a 15m by 10m basketball hoop and hard standing alongside a football area with two new goal posts. The new outdoor gym features nine different exercise stations including monkey bars, cross trainer, ski machine, spinning bike and hand bike.

The improved dog walking area includes new seating and gates as well as new dog waste bins and a dog agility area, now known as the Bark Park, with five items of equipment including a crawl tunnel.

The park enhancement project, costing £230,000, was funded with £200,000 from the EDF Energy Hinkley Point C Community Impact Mitigation Fund and £30,000 from RLT3 Developer Funds held by Sedgemoor District Council.

Kristy Blackwell, Together Team Coordinator said: “Whether you enjoy using an outdoor gym, dog walking, taking your children or grandchildren to the park, relaxing by a park bench after a stroll or sports there really is something for everyone in the park!

"I am delighted these facilities are so close by for Sydenham, Bower and Dunwear residents and hope everyone enjoys using them."

A spokesperson for Sedgemoor District Council said: “The free play and sport facilities on offer in Coronation Park are amongst the best in the district, this is a destination park for East Bridgwater, and the wider town, to be truly proud of."
