IF YOU love taking a selfie, now's your chance to get involved.

The Together Team in East Bridgwater is asking local residents to tweet their best smiley selfies and visit one of their forthcoming events to highlight the importance of good dental care as part of National Smile Month.

National Smile Month runs from May 16 to June 16 and promotes messages about maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

The aim is to raise awareness of brushing your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion, cutting down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks and visiting your dentist regularly.

Kristy Blackwell, Together Team coordinator, said: "The aim of National Smile Month is ultimately to improve the UK’s oral health.

"With the latest stats from Public Health England showing that whilst nationally, and across Somerset, tooth decay in the under 5’s has declined it is still above the current county average within Sedgemoor – we want to do something about that.

"It has been reported that 100 operations a day are being carried out nationally to remove rotten teeth from children and teenagers with the cost of missed school time due to dental work jumping to £35m a year.

"If we work with children, young people and families to educate on the importance of dental care we can reduce the number of ops dramatically.

"To help raise awareness we’ve organised a fun selfie campaign to try and show the importance of a great smile.

"We’ve also organised two drop-in events where all ages can come along and win prizes, take part in free activities and quizzes and take home smiley goodies.

"We hope to see you there and we’ll have our camera ready to snap those smiley photos."

Tweet @TogetherTeam your best smiley individual or group selfie using the hashtag #MySmileySelfie.

You can join the Together Team at the National Smile Month events at the Coronation Park family fun day on Parkway from 10.30am to 1pm on May 29 or outside Sydenham Community Centre, Parkway on June 2 at the same times.
