In another astounding victory, one of Bridgwater's very own has defended his world champion title.

Mixed martial artist, Mark Godbeer, has once again been crowned World Heavyweight Champion at the BAMMA 35 event at the Barclaycard Arena, Birmingham on May 14.

In what can only be described as a dream come true, the Bridgwater born fighter defeated his opponent, Stuart Austin, in a second round technical knock out, which saw him win the British Association of Mixed Martial ArtsWorld Championship belt.

A packed out crowd watched in awe as Mark fought his way to a victory, and his coach Arthur Meek says he 'couldn't be prouder.'

"Mark's a champion," he said.

"He's just defended his world title and he won by a second round technical knock out against Stuart Austin.

"To win that world champion title in the first place is amazing, but to actually defend it and win it for a second time is just great.

"Mark approached the fight with good preparation behind him and I couldn't be prouder.

"He's had a lot of training and commitment with myself, his head coach, Adam Barr, his strength and conditioning coach, a boxing coach in Taunton and Matt Male, the Jiu jitsu coach.

"Mark trains lots of different styles as there's many elements to his fight."

Arthur says that Mark's victory is down to years of 'sacrifice.'

"I'm just delighted for Mark," he said.

"It's the result of several years of hard training and sacrifice and he deserves it.

"In July, Mark will be fighting at the O2 Arena in the Bellator MMA competition, which is an American company.

"He also has a non-title fight to decide the best of Britain and eight weeks of training, and then he'll be looking to defend his BAMMA title.

"It's a busy year for Mark and he wants to prove his international status abroad.

"He is very keen to show he is the best in the world."

Mark started his training with Arthur eight years ago, as well as working at All or Nothing kickboxing and MMA gym in Bridgwater.

"Mark does most of his training around the South West," said Arthur.

"He's well known for his destructive stand up and fighting like a kick boxer.

"He's very deserving of his title and we are going to continue working hard to keep hold of it, and also secure those other titles."
