AN orphaned baby bunny, who was discovered under a pile of building sand, has been released back into the wild.

The rabbit was just a week old when was found in his nest along with two siblings in the sand pile on a driveway in Dunball, near Bridgwater.

The owner of the driveway dug into the sand and found the three orphaned babies, and took them to Secret World Wildlife Rescue in East Huntspill.

One of them sadly died very quickly, whilst the second sibling held on for a few hours, but it then appeared he had a problem with his head and did not survive.

The surviving bunny was taken under the care of volunteer Vicki Thompson and was named Solo.

He was kept warm and fed with tiny syringes of goats’ milk to give him the required nutrients.

After a few days, Solo opened his eyes.

Vicki persevered and after three weeks, he was starting to eat grass, hay and dandelion leaves.

Vicki said: "When Solo went out in the run for the first time, he wasn’t too sure about the grass to begin with, but soon got the idea and enjoyed the extra space."

At two months old, it was time for te rabbit to make the final steps towards a new life back in the wild.

At his release site which was a garden backing onto fields, Solo spent some time in a large run to adapt to his new surroundings.

He was given food and the shelter to support him while he found his way into the world.

Solo was released last week and Vicky said she is delighted.
