The zebra crossing in West Street in Bridgwater has been repainted following a campaign by residents and local councillors.

Writing to the Mercury Cllr Leigh Redman said: “I was really pleased to read last week in your paper that County Highways have seen sense and had agreed to repaint the fading crossing on West Street after my request and pressure from the local community through your paper, I was even more pleased to see that the crossing was painted by Wednesday afternoon, in time for the young people to walk across a newly painted crossing, this will make the crossing safer for residents old and new.”

Several residents have contacted the Mercury in recent weeks to express their concerns of the state of the paintwork which left the crossing difficult to spot in poor light. Several near misses have been reported including one when a car crossed the zebra crossing while children were on it.

Cllr Redman had written to Cllr Fothergill the Cabinet member for Highways pressing for action after paint became worn away by traffic. He has now also requested Highways to conduct a full review of all crossings in Bridgwater, this will allow other crossings requiring work to be repainted.

The head teacher of Westover Green School Mrs Good also supported the campaign to improve road safety in West Street saying the school backed the residents in what has been a successful battle with Highways.
