The last decade has not been kind to traditional pubs with a huge number closing across the UK. But how many Bridgwater pubs are now nothing more than a boozy memory.

Bridgwater Mercury:

The Cottage Inn was situated on North Street and closed in 1957. This pub has now been demolished and replaced with flats

The Devonshire Arms was situated on Eastover and closed in 1963. With thanks to Dave Bown.

The Old Compass Inn was situated at 15 Wembdon Road. This pub closed in 1948 and has now been demolished. The site is used for a garage.

The Seven Stars was situated on Friarn Street.

The Ship Afloat was situated on Market Street and closed c.1980.

The Sloop Inn was situated on Eastover. This pub was also known as The Globe Inn. With thanks to Dave Bown.

The Steam Packet Inn was situated on St John Street and closed in 1958. With thanks to Dave Bown.

Bridgwater Mercury:

The Three Crowns 15 St Mary Street closed in 2003. Planning permission was granted for conversion to flats. Owned in the 1940s, and maybe early 1950s, possibly also the 1930s by Ben Winter and his wife Irene. There was a skittle alley there, and I believe that it was a stop on a stage coach route at one time, where they used to change horses.
