A scheme in North Petherton to help the refugees in Syria by sending them old coats has been hailed as a success. Held at the livestock market last week the appeal pulled in around 100 bags filled with old coats said the organisers CountryCoats2Syria.

The organiser Richard Walton said: "We had a great reception at Sedgemoor Livestock Market on Saturday. We were able to dispatch 100 bags to Syria with the support of Syria relief. A big thank you to all at the market and Junction 24 for their support and help."

Environment Minister Elizabeth Truss MP said: “CountryCoats2Syria is a fantastic initiative, which sees the rural community coming together to offer a practical response to the humanitarian crisis in Syria.

“With winter fast approaching, the simple gift of a coat could make a real difference to people on the ground. I wish the initiative every success and hope everyone will give generously.”

Mr Walton said they planned another collection soon.
