THE DOG, The Dove and the Dolphin may all feature in a David Attenborough documentary at some stage but they are also the names of pubs past and present in Bridgwater.

Author Jane Penfold says she’s been overwhelmed by the help of residents in compiling her history of Bridgwater and district pubs as she’s worked through them street by street.

However she’s still in need of more information and of course photographs of the hostelries. This week we are appealing on her behalf for help with pubs beginning D and E.

So here goes; beginning with The Deer. Jane doesn’t even know which street it was in.
Any help is much appreciated. She’s also after news of The Devonshire Arms in Friarn Street, and the Devonshire Arms in Eastover – perhaps these were frequented by expat Devonians or were owned by the Duke of Devonshire at one time.

Then there’s The Dial, The Dog and The Dolphin, which she believes was in Binford Place.
Any news of The Dove in St John Street and Monmouth Street would be of use while she doesn’t have a location for The Draper’s Arms or the Drum and Monkey although she is aware of The Drum and Monkey in Westonzoyland but like news of the former landlords.

The Duke was the happy haunt of followers of the defeated and executed Duke of Monmouth which was in the High Street and for a time was also called The Duke of Monmouth and even the Lamb Inn.

There was also a pub on the site of the ambulance station is now so perhaps the paramedics might know that one.

A couple more Dukes had pubs in Bridgwater named after them – the Duke of Cambridge in Eastover and the Duke of Wellington in St Mary Street are both in need of names of landlords and dates if anyone knows.

The Dunweare Inn in Colley lane is another D list pub Jane needs info on while there’s also The Engineers’ Arms in Albert Street needs furnishing with a saloon bar full of names and dates.
Strangely there appear to be no Docker’s Inn pub in Bridgwater despite the docks providing work for decades – or perhaps there was? And there isn’t a Dirty Duck - usually a euphemism for The Black Swan.
Finally, The Enmore Inn in Enmore shouldn’t be forgotten if only because it’s the only E on Jane’s list.
n If you are sober enough to recall any of these pubs and supply details of their past then do get in touch and we’ll pass your details onto Jane. E-mail harry.mottram@nqsw.co.uk.
