Following a candid report by Police at Bridgwater Town Council last month over the low numbers of officers the Police and Crime Commission (PCC) Sue Mountstevens is to address councillors over their concerns.

Cllr Brian Smedley said: "Sue Mountstevens the PCC for Avon and Somerset will be speaking at our December 3rd Town Council meeting."

“We said at the last meeting that we would get her down here to answer the questions raised by her hard-pressed officers and that’s what we’ve done."

"The aim here is to make sure the people of Bridgwater have the Police resources we need in this town and to find out how she intends to ensure this is the case."

Revelations by Sgt Ryan Edwards that there was a potential drugs problem in Syndenham, that police moral was low and there were too few officers available shocked many in the town. The officer said: “We have a current issue around the Sydenham estate over drugs being supplied from outside, it is a problem throughout Somerset.

"We have become a soft target for outside groups to come in and a takeover. It’s happening in Weston, in Yeovil and Taunton and is potentially happening in Bridgwater. We have an operation to combat that and will work with the Together Team on it. That’s what you want to do as police officers, to find these criminals and catch them.”

The Town Council pledged to support the police and invited the PCC down to meet them to give an overview of the situation. Meanwhile the town's MP Ian Liddell Grainger has repeatedly called for the PCC to resign.

The meeting will be open to the public in the town hall and starts at 7.30pm.
