BRIDGWATER Town head into this weekend’s game against high-flying Swindon Supermarine full of confidence following Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Shortwood United in the Red Insure Cup.
Ben Palmer headed home Town’s winner on 38 minutes, while a well organised defence kept the home side out.
Shortwood controlled long spells of the game, but were kept at bay by some resolute defending and the heroics of Town goalkeeper, Jake Viney.
Viney pulled off a string of outstanding saves to keep Shortwood at bay.
Jake Lee went closest to equalising for Shortwood when he hit the crossbar in the second-half, but Town held on to book their place in the second round.
Saturday’s opponents Swindon Supermarine sit third in Southern League Division One South and West, two points off leaders North Leigh with 22 points from 11 games.
They beat the league’s top scorers, Winchester 2-1 on Saturday thanks to a brace from winger Bradley Gray.
The win was Marine’s seventh in the league so far this season.
A Bridgwater win this weekend could see them climb out of the bottom two ahead of next weekend’s trip to fellow strugglers Marlow.
The Robins then travel to Larkhall Athletic on Wednesday, October 28.
