Sporty pupils from Haygrove School organised a charity football match to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

When Year 11 students discovered that fellow classmate Daniel Payne was undergoing treatment for leukaemia, they wanted to organise their own fundraising event.

Two teams from Dan’s year group battled it out on the field last week.

Parents and staff also rallied around donating cakes to sell at the football match and donations were made by spectators during the game.

Daniel took to the pitch to play briefly, receiving crowd cheers.

Daniel's parents Jeff and Jayne also attended the event.

Jayne said: “We are overwhelmed by the support from the students and the school which is a great comfort to us all during this difficult time.”

Head of Year 11, Mrs Gregg, said: “We are immensely proud of our students for organising the whole event themselves and so far over £3,900 has been raised for Teenage Cancer Trust, and there is still more fundraising events to follow.”
