MOTORISTS are being warned to expect “travel inconvenience” after work got underway today (Monday, July 27) on a safe walking and cycling route from North Petherton to Bridgwater.

The road is being widened as there are no pavements or only narrow ones for much of the 2.5-mile route.

The scheme is part of the £4million Bridgwater Way project combining public and private sector investment to deliver a high quality cycle and walking route.

The work has led to temporary traffic lights on the A38 between North Petherton and the Huntworth roundabout for up to 19 weeks.

A Somerset County Council spokesman said the lights are needed so the work can be carried out safely and as quickly as possible.

He added: “We apologise in advance for any travel inconvenience caused.”

The works will be undertaken in sections starting at North Petherton with traffic lights in use 24/7.

Once the first section is complete, the lights and works will be moved onto the next section moving towards Bridgwater, with the project due for completion in December.

Cllr David Hall, the council’s cabinet member for business inward investment and policy, said: “This is an important development which responds to the needs of local people by providing safer routes for cyclists and walkers between North Petherton and Bridgwater.

“Although there will be some disruption, ultimately the end result will provide a much needed link between the two towns.”

Cllr Leigh Redman, Labour group leader at County Hall and member for Bridgwater South, said the scheme is a “massive step”, making a main traffic route safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

He added: “I have been pressing the county council to accelerate the final elements and over the next few months works will be starting here and through Hamp, including the Brownes pond footpath enhancement, including widening of the canal bridge.

“All elements once complete will be a great triumph for Bridgwater providing a safe, off road route from North Petherton into the heart of our town.”
