PEOPLE in Bridgwater are being warned not to tamper with roadwork signs at the junction of Taunton Road and Broadway.

The message from Somerset County Council and EDF Energy comes after cones were moved on Friday night (June 19) to prevent traffic accessing St Mary Street.

The works currently involve overnight closures, with roads being reopened by 6am, but on Friday a trader found when opening his business that Old Taunton Road was apparently still closed.

An investigation found that in the early hours of Friday morning, someone had deliberately obstructed the entrance to Old Taunton Road by moving the traffic cones back onto the highway.

EDF say someone was working entirely alone and without authority.

Cllr David Hall, Somerset County Council’s cabinet member for business, inwards investment and policy highways, said: “This is a very disappointing incident. “The roadworks are being carried out at night to cause minimum impact on residents and businesses.

“This is the last thing local businesses need when they have been so patient in dealing with the challenging circumstances.

“Please do not tamper with any roadworks equipment, it is disruptive and dangerous.”
