BRIDGWATER’S iconic Willow Man is once again in need of repair but there is a question mark over who will foot the bill.
The giant sculpture underwent a massive facelift in 2012 which saw the head and arms repaired, at a cost of £18,000.
Serena De La Hey, who was responsible for creating the 40ft structure, is aware of a large hole developing in one of the legs but says that she cannot do anything until she can get the funding.
She said: “I am looking at doing some repairs on the limbs and also the long-term maintenance of it.
“However I’m waiting to get past the elections before we start running into the funding question.”
The giant structure was erected in 2000 and was initially intended to be in place for three years.
But now it has become a permanent feature and Serena hopes to establish a more consistent way to fund repairs on the Willow Man.
Currently the artist relies on various sources for grants and donations but admits she finds raising the money to be a struggle.
“Getting the funding is always an interesting time,” she said.
“But I’m hoping to come up with something more permanent in the future.”
