CALLOUS vandals have targeted a grave in a Bridgwater cemetery leaving a trail of destruction for a grieving family to clean up.

The incidents in Quantock Road Cemetery have led Pauline Frounks to remove ornaments and decorations from the grave of her husband, Cyril, in the hope that his resting place will now be left undisturbed.

Pauline, 58, says that since her husband died four years ago she has worked hard to make the grave a place where the family can go to spend time and keep his memory alive.

However after a recent spate of vandal attacks the mother-of-two discovered that the wings of an ornamental angel had been deliberately snapped off.

Speaking to the Mercury, Pauline said: “I was devastated when I saw what they’d done. “The wings had been snapped off and placed on my husband’s headstone.

“I just can’t understand why anyone would want to do that.

“It’s made me wish I’d never laid him to rest there.”

Pauline’s daughter, Lins Frounks, said vandalism has been affecting her dad’s burial plot since last year, after she had found flowers ripped up and thrown about and balloons stolen.

Lins, 37, said: “It’s a shame for everyone. “It’s a shame for my dad as well because he was such a highly thought of person in Bridgwater – he’d lived here for 40 years and he deserves to be able to rest in peace.

“We’ve all tried to make it look as nice as we could so we can take the kids up for Fathers’ Day and spend an afternoon there.

“But now we won’t be able to do that.” The cemetery is looked after by Bridgwater Town Council which says there is an occupied property on site and the gates are locked at sundown.

Alan Hurford, town council clerk, said: “I am not aware of any complaints having been made to the town council regarding problems in the cemetery.”
