RUMOURS that Hollywood heartthrob Johnny Depp has moved to the South West gathered pace this week, amid speculation he has splashed out on a £2.5million house in Broomfield.

Despite previous reports in the national press claiming that the Pirates of the Caribbean star had set up home in Timsbury, near Bath, it is now understood the Quantock Hills may be his chosen location.

Several sources claim that Depp, 43, and his partner, French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis, have snapped up a bolt hole in the picturesque hamlet.

Local people have been on the look out to try and catch a glimpse of the couple.

It has also been suggested their children have been booked into a local independent school in Taunton.

Estate agents approached by The Mercury would "neither confirm nor deny" that they had sold a property to the actor.

Depp is regarded as one of Hollywood's finest talents, and is famed for his diverse roles in films including Edward Scissorhands, Donnie Brascoe, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas and From Hell.

Have you seen Johnny Depp out house hunting? Or heard any rumours? Do you believe the gossip? If so, why not share your views on our forum?

Broomfield is a magical place, rich in history and fabulous legends, with unspoiled landscapes. If a Hollywood star has fallen in love with the area it should not be a suprise.

Mr Piggy Kruger makes an interesting point about the fabulous legends surrounding Broomfield. Readers might be enthralled by the ancient legend of the Moneyfield, in which is supposedly buried an iron goblin castle full of gold. It appears that the Taunton newspapers in the late 1700s reported an attempt by a local fellow, Doctor Farrer, to dig up the treasure. He cleverly located the spot with a dowsing rod, marked it, and returned with his manservant at the next full moon (the magic castle was only discoverable beneath a full moon, legend said.). The newpaper reported that the manservant was given a shovel and instructed to dig at the marked spot. He soon struck an iron door, which opened to reveal shrieking hordes of hellish goblins, who grabbed the manservant and nearly pulled him inside. The Doctor fortunately had his Bible at hand, and hurled it into the portal, causing the goblins within to loose their grip on the terried man. The iron door closed and Doctor Farrer and his manservant fled for their lives. To my knowledge none has ever dared the feat again, at least under the crucial light of full moon. If any readers know the exact date of the original press report, I would be grateful if they could post it on this site. Further details on this fabulous legend may possibly be found by searching the internet. If Mr. Depp has need of interesting topics for new Hollywood movies, perhaps he might consider this glorious legend as a basis.

If this movie star does come to Broomfield, and wants a great idea for a great film, I can just picture him as the village"s world-famous electrical pioneer, Andrew Crosse, who lived and worked at Fyne Court and was perhaps one of the greatest scientists ever, as his groundbreaking electrical experiments were a herald of the modern age. Cool beans, begorra.

I jolly well hope to goodness that this American film star never reads these comments from local people, they all seem to be completely barking mad.

Steady on, old girl, I meant nothing of the sort. It is more a case of the REST of them, don"t you see, and may I say your comments on the old legend of the goblin castle were very interesting. Perhaps this hollywood chap really will get some ideas here, maybe you could write a filmscript on this topic?. You might have to add a few bits and pieces, for example this Doctor Farrer character could be an American spy, sympathising with the yanksin their battle for independence, etc, etc. You could also hint that the iron goblin castle was in fact a buried spacecraft from another galaxy, and the goblins were actually alien beings.I wish you every success if you attempt this task, old girl.

He has made the right decision. Bridgwater's a marvellous town with a proud radical history and I would like to be the first to invite him for a drink in the Labour Club.

Red Smed puts a positive angle on our town, very refreshingly. Maybe a US visitor might accept our local hospitality, as long as they do not suspect a Communist resurgence here.

Right on, you guys, I sure as **** would accept a few rounds of hospitality if in your part of the world. Where exactly is Bridgwater?. I can"t even find the godddam UK on the map, can I get a taxi there from Iraq?

Hey, if some heavy hollywood geezer moves to Broomfield will there be all mafia-like security everywhere, kind of knocking the peacefulness on the head a bit?. Me and my girl like chilling with a country walk when the weather is right, we don"t want no private armies after us.

If a big hollywood star moves to the area I sincerely hope we don"t get hordes of fans whizzing around the narrow roads. Driving on some of these lanes already feels like playing Russian Roulette, especially when the sick and sad four-by-fourers of the "hunt" are out with their binoculars, blocking the roads.

Broomfield is an absolutely spiffing place and if only planning policy was not quite so restrictive, we could perhaps have a few dozen new homes nuilt there so more people could enjoy living there.

Johnny Depp is an excellant actor.
He was so good as supporting actor along with Al Pacino in Donnie Brasso.
