COUNCIL tax bills won’t be landing on doormats across Sedgemoor until mid-March, but already fraudsters are up to their annual trickery.

Sedgemoor District Council is warning residents about fraudsters who claim they can save them money by reassessing their council tax property band or claims that home owners could be entitled to council tax reductions.

A council spokesperson said: “The complaints relate to either unsolicited phone calls or visits by people claiming they can offer reductions in council tax as part of a scheme operated on behalf of the government and Sedgemoor District Council.

“They claim that for a oneoff fee they can reassess property bands that could result in homeowners qualifying for lower council tax.

“The tricksters tell customers that they are due a reduction in their Council Tax Band and asking them for their bank details for a refund to be made.”

Anyone who has recently received a phone call and been asked for their bank details should call the council to check the validity.
