A YOUNG mum headbutted a mugger who robbed her while she walked to the shops with her three-year-old son.

Erin Olson, 29, was grabbed from behind by two men near Morrisons, in Bridgwater, in the daylight attack while her son, Alex, sat in a pushchair in front of her.

Erin said she had just passed Brownes Pond when the men pounced.

Speaking to The Mercury she said: “I didn’t know who they were or what they wanted but I knew I wasn’t going to let them anywhere near my son.

“One of them twisted my arm round my back and I instinctively spun round and headbutted him on his nose.

“I didn’t think. It was just a splitsecond decision.”

The incident happened just twoweeks after an aggravated burglary in Bridgwater during which a mother and child were attacked in their home.

Erin continued: “I didn’t know if it was the same guys or anything.

“I just did what I had to do to protect Alex. That was all I was thinking about.”

The mum-of-two, who had only moved to Bridgwater a year ago said she suffers nightmares from the attack and is scared to go shopping or outside with Alex.

“I’m still shaken up by it and they’ve badly messed up my shoulder.

“I’m on painkillers and I’m lucky if I get to sleep at night.

“It’s really affected me in the sense that Morrisons is my local supermarket being just five minutes away but I don’t go that way now.

“I’ve had to change where I go and what I do.”

The muggers escaped with bank cards and cash that Erin had just withdrawn to pay for an anniversary meal for her husband.

She said: “I’d taken a bit extra out of the bank to buy something nice to cook for him but, to be honest, it’s not about the money that was stolen – it’s about trying to make sure they don’t do it to anybody else.

“I was lucky and managed to fend them off to a certain extent.

“A little old lady or someone may not be able to do that.”

The incident happened between 9.30am and 10am on Tuesday, February 10 near Brownes Pond behind the Morrisons store on Broadway.

The first man is described as being in his 50s, stocky build and was wearing blue jeans, a black puffer jacket and a black beanie hat.

The second man is described as 6ft and slim, in his 20s or 30s with blonde hair and wearing blue jeans, a red puffer jacket and blue trainers.

Police say investigations are still ongoing and anyone with information should call Bridgwater police on 101 quoting reference 14767/15, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
