THE open day at the Magistrates’ Court was particularly poignant for Bridgwater resident John Harding.
His uncle was chief constable in 1911 at around the time the courthouse opened.
Speaking to the Mercury, John said: “It’s nice to have a look inside the old courtroom and picture where my uncle would have sat more than 100 years ago.”

John was at the courthouse on Friday morning to take a tour of the building as part of the campaign to have the building registered as a community asset.
He said: “I’ve lived in Bridgwater all my life and it’s a shame to think we might lose these beautiful old buildings.

“I grew up around here and remember playing football in the street along what’s now Angel Crescent.
“We need to keep buildings like this and keep them part of the community because we seem to lose so many parts of Bridgwater’s past.”
