HAYGROVE School’s Year 10 boys’ hockey team claimed the Somerset County Cup for the third year in a row last week.
They secured their hat trick of wins after defeating Holyrood Academy in a nail-biting contest which was ultimately decided by penalty flicks.
Having conceded a goal early in the first half, the Haygrove lads came under some pressure until Morgan Williams scored an outstandinee g first goal to level the score.
The second half followed a similar pattern with Haygrove falling behind despite some great saves from keeper James Salt until Morgan scored his second equaliser.
The game was tense until the end with both teams pressing for the elusive winning goal, but with the score at 2-2 when the final whistle blew, it was down to who could hold their nerve in the penalty flicks competition.
Fortunately for Haygrove, their goalkeeper did not concede a single shot so they were able to take the County Cup home.
The Year 11 boys hockey team also made it to the county finals in a repeat of last year’s game in which they defeated The Castle School to claim the title.
However, history was not to be repeated and the Haygrove boys had to settle for second place.
