HAIRSTYLIST Cole Mehrlich showed he was heads above the competition by picking up a top apprentice award at Bridgwater College.

The 19-year-old student was named the Business & Professional Studies Apprentice Champion at a ceremony held at the Canalside.

The award is given to a student who has demonstrated extraordinary aptitude in their line of work or made a considerable contribution to their employer’s success.

Cole, of Taunton, said: “I was thrilled to be nominated and even more to actually win the award. I would like to thank many people for their support, especially Combers Salon in Taunton where I work.

“Simon Willetts, the owner, gave me a chance to prove myself and has been very supportive as have all the other stylists.”

Cole studied a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Hairdressing and worked for free in a barber’s shop before being taken on as a ladies hairdressing apprentice at Combers.

After just a month he approached his new boss with a business plan to launch a barbering section within the salon and has now established a growing clientele.

Simon added: “I am delighted Cole has won this award although not surprised.

He has that great mix of talent and drive which will see him go a long way. He is a great asset to Combers.”

A spokesperson for Bridgwater College said: “Cole has shown excellent attendance and work ethic and has been a model student attending all lessons. We wish him well."
