MORE than 1,000 people packed into Haygrove School’s sports hall to commemorate the end of the First World War with a special Remembrance Service led by the Rev Ed Moll, of St George’s Church, Wembdon.

The service began with students and staff joining the school choir to sing a hymn and included readings by staff and students before a remembrance wreath was laid by head boy Samual Hunt and head girl Francesca Smith.

Mrs Whiteoak played the Last Post and a two-minute silence was observed.

An uplifting rendition of God Save the Queen by the congregation and choir was followed by an address from the head teacher, Karen Canham and then, as a finale, Year 10 student Eleanor Blincow gave a powerful and moving performance of the famous wartime classic ‘We’ll Meet Again’.

The service was attended by Cllr Ann Bown and Cllr Gill Slocombe along with Michael Payne – a Royal British Legion poppy seller who visits Haygrove with poppies every Armistice Day.

Mrs Canham then accompanied the head boy and girl to King Square to put the school’s wreath among the other tributes laid in remembrance.
