HINKLEY Point power station’s policing team visited Westover Green School last week to demonstrate road safety to students in preparation for the increase in heavy vehicles in the area as the development of Hinkley C gets underway.

The team joined forces with Somerset Road Safety, South West Ambulance Trust, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, and DHL Morrisons to host two days of interactive workshops at the school.

The initiative is designed to raise awareness on stopping distances, blindspots on HGVs and to demonstrate how to walk to school safely by being visible and alert.

PCSO Sue Marks told the Mercury: “It’s such a worthwhile event. The children are like sponges and they really absorb and enjoy the day.

“All the agencies have come together for this positive initiative on road safety.

“This is to prepare for the increase in heavy plant vehicles and to educate the young people in our community who will be using the roads.”

This is one of several projects run this year by the Hinkley police team and the other agencies that are making it their mission to educate young people in the area on how to remain safe and to be alert to the traffic.

Children had the opportunity to try on police hats, experiment with high visibility clothing, hop inside HGV’s, ambulance and fire vehicles.

Westover Green School’s head teacher, Heather Good, said: “We have had two very busy and very successful days with the services.

“The children have taken part in a wide range of activities and each one has sent them away with extremely important messages about safety, including road, fire and pedestrian safety.

“Every child in the school took part and thoroughly enjoyed the days.”
