BRIDGWATER people are being given the opportunity to help shape the future of rail travel in the town next week.

Following publication of its “Strategy for Bridgwater Rail Station” back in September this year, the transport campaign group Friends of Bridgwater Station have organised a public meeting to discuss their aims for public transport in the Bridgwater area.

Representatives from First Great Western, Sedgemoor District Council, RailFuture and TravelWatch South West have been invited to speak at the meeting with the chance for people to ask questions and comment on the vision for future Bridgwater rail travel.

The think tank recently released a report arguing for improved facilities and services at the town’s rail station.

Glen Burrows, from the Friends of Bridgwater Station group told the Mercury: “We hope to show why we think enhancement and development of Bridgwater Rail Station deserves greater focus at this time of expansion of the town and surrounding area.

“Despite the aura of doom and gloom about transport funding, we believe there is a positive future for Bridgwater train services.

“The town is expanding, and demand for rail services is growing – particularly from the young.

“Apart from the bicycle, rail is the most environmentally friendly form of transport.”

The meeting is at 7pm on December 4 at the Railway Club, Wellington Road, Bridgwater.
