BRIDGWATER residents are being reminded of the dangers of lighting candles in their homes as the fire service launch their Candle Fire Safety Week.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service are asking people to snuff out the risk with candle fires resulting in over 350 casualties each year in England and more than 40% of all fires started by candles resulting in a death or injury.

The fire service urge those who are likely to light candles this winter to ensure they have a working smoke alarm in their home and to make sure open flames are kept away from flammable materials such as curtains.

Alan Coxon, community safety prevention manager said: “Place your lit candles with extra care, away from curtains, pets and children and always remember to put them out when you leave the room, even for a moment.

“Even with these precautions it is vital to be prepared should the worst happen.

“A working smoke alarm can give you the vital time you need to get out, stay out and call 999.”
