ONE in 11 renters in the South-West has suffered health problems in the last year because rogue landlords failed to deal with poor conditions in their properties, newly-released research shows.

The YouGov survey of more than 4,500 private renters, commissioned by Shelter and British Gas, revealed that 44% of renters said they had lived in a property with mould and 41% in damp in the past year, which can cause health conditions.

Around 29% had a leaking roof or windows and 15% had electrical hazards.

Shelter is releasing the figures as part of its campaign to change the law to protect renters from ‘revenge evictions’.
