THE resurfacing of a road in Cossington has been completed in less than week rather than two months, thanks to an innovative technique.

Somerset County Council have strengthened and improved over 600m of the A39 at Cossington with work being completed in six nights through recycling 99% of the existing road material to rebuild the carriageway.

By pulverising and then compacting the old road, then laying down fresh Tarmac on the new surface, the county council say they have reduced the cost to the tax payer, the length of time the roadworks have taken, and disruption to one of Somerset’s busiest roads.

The environmental impact of the work was also minimised, as any extra materials required were transported to the site from a quarry in Frome.

Cllr Harvey Siggs, Somerset County Council’s cabinet member for highways, said: “The work done at Cossington presents a major step forward, and obviously we will be looking to use this on-site recycling technique where it is possible to do so.”
