A SERIES of small-scale flood relief measures to protect local homes and businesses is ongoing with some of them almost completed.

The schemes are being funded by Sedgemoor District Council, which set aside £50,000 to help with flood relief schemes designed with local knowledge to protect neighbouring properties.

They are:

  • £30,000 on a flood wall to stop flooding of five properties in St Saviour’s Avenue along the boundary of Blake Gardens, together with bespoke flood boards for installation at the gates.

The boards will go in when high tides, heavy rain and surges are predicted. These conditions may be experienced during particularly high tides in 2015.

These works started in July and are nearly complete.

£13,700 on land next to Mill House, Church Road, North Newton, to repair a collapsed culvert, remove tree roots and construct a new manhole to alleviate flooding regularly experienced.

These works were completed in July.

  • £16,500 to replace a deteriorating brick culvert in Baymead Lane, North Petherton, with a new culvert in a garden in Baymead Lane on the watercourse at the downstream end of the village and build a 15m gabion wall to stabilise the collapsed bank downstream.

These works started in August.

The following projects start next month:

  • £4,500 to build a headwall below West Town Farm, Greinton to provide a flood storage area to the west of the village where the watercourse has deep banks to contain flood water when required.

  • £2,000 to repair and improve the catchpit and grill next to Filberts Cottage to alleviate regular blockages and flooding in the area.

£600 to repair defective pipework near the telephone call box, adjacent to Coates Cottage, to alleviate flooding.

  • Provision of a new headwall and foundation to prevent further erosion to the outfall into the watercourse in the field south of Church Road near Little Croft, North Newton.

  • Repairs to a stone wall along the watercourse next to Church Walk, North Petherton, and the provision of foundations and replacement stone.
