SEDGEMOOR District Council’s clean surroundings team were quick to remove 116 tyres at Gypsy Corner, near Huntworth.

Within half an hour of it being reported, staff were on the scene and proceeded to clear the tyres away.

A spokesperson for Sedgemoor District Council said: “Fly tipping is a serious environmental problem, which is unsightly, hazardous to children and attracts vermin.

“It is an offence with stiff penalties, from fines of up to £50,000 in magistrate's court to an unlimited fine or up to five years' imprisonment at crown court.

“Rough costs of removing these tyres are in the region of around £150 and that is without disposal cost of the tyres.”

Cllr Gillian Taylor said: “I saw the tyres this morning; what I can’t understand is why people are fly-tipping tyres and then expecting the council to pay to clear them.

“I am glad they came and cleared them so promptly and top marks to the council and the Clean Surroundings team.”
