SOMERROCKERS flocked to Bridgwater’s big top on Friday and Saturday to hear the stadium sounds of music icons past and present for its ninth year running at the town’s rugby ground.

Festival organiser Dan Smith said SomerRock 2014 had proved “the busiest yet” thanks to a prize combination of hard work and high quality acts.

Dan told the Mercury: “It’s been fantastic; we’ve had our strongest ever ticket sales.

“We’re already thinking about our tenth SomerRock in 2015 – we want to do something special.

“The weather has been perfect for us, thankfully, and people have really helped us out.

“I’d like to say a special thanks to all my staff, as well as a big one to Robbie Davis of RJD Scaffolding, who was able to help us out last minute.”

Sarah Keirle was also back for her fourth SomerRock for her charity challenge of face painting non-stop across the weekend.

“It’s been absolutely fab this year,” she says. “We painted 70 faces in three hours on Friday night, and we’re expecting to reach £1,200 by the end of Saturday night.

“This year we’re doing it for Cancer Research UK. Lots of people have lost someone to the disease in their families.”

Where Queen tribute, QEII, went down a storm on Friday, for many in the crowd, it was Oasish – an homage to the anthemic charisma of Noel and Liam Gallagher – who presented Saturday’s real treat.

Oasish frontman Paul Higginson, who also plays guitar for Chesney Hawkes and in the throes of the prime tributes gigging season, said he had ‘got’ Liam down to a ‘T’.

“I look at this as theatre. Once I go on stage I play a role; a character. I dress like him, walk like him … I’ve got some good memories of being around the Britpop scene.”
