SOMERSET County Council has responded to safety concerns about road signs being obscured by vegetation.

The Mercury was contacted by reader David Gliddon after he noticed a number of warning signs had become overgrown by bushes and trees.

He said: “This is a problem on the A361 approaching Walford Cross on the left hand side where the large road signs are obscured.

“On the A38 heading from Taunton towards Bridgwater on the left hand side many signs are obscured, noticeably at the brow of the hill near the Maypole Inn by the Adsborough turn.

“I realise some of these may be the concern of private landowners but surely the local authority needs to urgently look at implementing a safety check and getting these trees, hedges and verges trimmed.”

A spokesman for Somerset County Council said: “We have written to Mr Gliddon within our ten-day response target and have thanked him for raising his concerns.

“We have also visited the sites in question and will take action where necessary.

“We endeavour to keep road signs clear as part of our annual environmental maintenance programme, but we also encourage members of the public to report any problems by phoning 0845 345 9155 or visiting www.somerset.gov.uk
