EASTOVER and Bridgwater Railway Station have been identified as key areas which could receive a much-needed facelift from a multi-million pound project.

As reported last month, people were asked for their views on the Celebration Mile, a pedestrian route from the station to the Docks which tidies up several areas of the town.

Steve Harris, senior economic development officer for Sedgemoor District Council, told the Mercury this week: “We had about 100 responses to a questionnaire about the project and I’d say about 85% were really positive.

“Everybody wanted to see Eastover improved and we were surprised to find that quite a lot of people want to see the station area enhanced.”

A draft report on the findings from the consultation will be submitted to SDC this week. The council chose the Celebration Mile as the first project as part of The Bridgwater Vision plan.

A further full report is expected to be given to the council executive committee by the end of July and members will decide which parts of the project to pursue.

Mr Harris added: “It’s unlikely the whole project can be delivered all at once. There are so many different areas and elements to it that it’s unlikely we will have the money to do it all in one go.

“But elements like the station environment can be done fairly quickly. Work on the hotel in that area should begin in the next three to four months, financed privately.

“The Celebration Mile document will act as a blueprint for the town, and elements could be secured through Section 106 funding from developers in that area.”

The feasibility study was funded by EDF from some of the first part of the S106 financial contribution from Hinkley Point C.

The proposals include improving signage, creative seating and lighting, enhancing green spaces, putting art on blank walls, public spaces and more.

Areas featured are Angel Crescent, Bridgwat-er Docks, Fore Street, St John Street, Eastover and the train station.
