THE family of a Cannington student who was killed after being hit by a train near Burnham say he will be “missed terribly” by all who knew him.

Jake Bowles, 16, who was a student at Brymore Academy, died on Sunday, May 25, when a train hit him on a stretch of track near Highbridge and Burnham Station.

In a statement, his family said: “Jake was a much loved son, brother to five sisters, grandson and nephew who will be missed terribly by all his family and friends.

“He was studying at Brymore College, a place he loved, and hoped, one day, to have a career in agriculture that would allow him to work with tractors - which he also loved.

“Jake was a quiet boy, a mature and thoughtful son, who adored his animals and loved to go fishing.

“This is an extremely difficult time for us and, whilst we are touched by the kind messages and support we have received, we ask that our privacy be respected and we are given time and space to grieve.”

Friends of the teenager, who was from Lympsham, have been leaving condolences on his Facebook page, describing him as having “a heart of gold”.

Abigail May Butterfield wrote: “RIP to Jake Bowles; such a beautiful friendly person that had such a kind heart! My love goes to all his family and friends that are going through such a hard time, hard to believe I saw you just the other day! Rest in peace.”

Jake's aunt, Sarah McCormack, wrote: “Goodnight to my beautiful, kind, funny and much loved nephew! Totally heartbroken. I have and always will love you to the moon and back. Be at rest Jake I love you so much. Thoughts with your Mum, Steve and sisters.”

Maisie Horwood wrote: “Cherishing the memories we shared together when we were younger. You'll be remembered for being such a genuine person to everyone and such a laugh to be around; heart of gold. My love and thoughts go out to your family during this tragic time. RIP Jake x x.”

Gabriella Siangolis wrote: “RIP Jake Bowles, truly an amazing person, always put his friends first before anyone else, he had a heart of gold.”

Police were called to a stretch of railway line on May 25 just before 9pm, following reports that a person had been struck by a train.

British Transport Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Jake's death and, as well as providing support to Jake's family, officers are now assisting in a report for the coroner.

The inquest will be opened on Tuesday at 2.15 at the old West Somerset Council offices in Williton.
